Susan Lambert is an associate professor in the School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago. She holds a master's degree in program evaluation and a doctorate in social work and organizational psychology from the University of Michigan. Lambert conducted one of the most widely cited studies in work-family literature and has published a number of other articles, which are well on their way to becoming classics.
Lambert recently completed a study of 88 lower-level, hourly jobs in 22 major corporations in four industries (retail, hospitality, financial services, and transportation). The study examined how opportunities for wage growth, benefit access, sustained employment, and an adequate income are shaped by practices found on the front lines of today's firms. Currently, she is conducting a workplace experiment that examines the effects of improved scheduling practices on sales associates' work performance, family practices, and well-being.
